The short version
SEO (search engine optimisation) is about appearing in a list of search results. AI visibility, sometimes called GEO, is about being named in the written answer an AI assistant gives. The groundwork overlaps a lot: clear pages, accurate details and a good reputation help both. The difference is in what the customer sees and how you check it.
Side by side
| Aspect | Search (SEO) | AI answers (AI visibility) |
|---|---|---|
| What the customer sees | A page of links and map results to choose from | A written answer that names a few businesses |
| Where you want to be | On the first page of results | Named in the answer, and described correctly |
| How results vary | Fairly stable from one search to the next | Can change between askings of the same question |
| How you measure it | Search Console, rank trackers, website visits | Asking the real questions and recording who's named |
| What helps most | Clear pages, links from other sites, a fast website | Clear pages, consistent details, genuine reviews, mentions elsewhere |
| Who controls it | Search engines, not you or any agency | The AI companies, not you or any agency |
Where they overlap
Most of what helps a small business in search also helps in AI answers. A page for each main service, written in the words customers use. Your towns and areas spelled out. The same name, address and phone number on your website, Google Business Profile and directories. Genuine, recent reviews. A website that loads quickly and works on a phone. If you've done these for SEO, you've done a lot of the AI groundwork too.
Where they differ
Three differences matter in practice. First, an AI answer usually names only a few businesses, so there's no "page two". Second, the same question can get a different answer next time, so a single check can mislead; look at patterns over several askings. Third, assistants can repeat wrong information about you in a confident tone, which a search result rarely does. That makes checking what's said about you, not just whether you appear, more important. Our page on wrong AI answers covers that.
Where to start
Find out what the assistants say now, fix the information you control, then compare. If you already pay for SEO, ask your provider whether the work also makes your service pages and listings clearer; it often does. And be cautious of anyone selling either as a guaranteed ranking. Nobody outside Google or the AI companies controls their results.
See where you stand first. It's free.
We ask ChatGPT and Google's Gemini the kind of questions your customers ask, then email you whether you were named, roughly where, and who was suggested instead. A person reviews your check before we send it, usually within 2 working days.

If my SEO is good, am I fine in AI answers?
Often you're in a better position, because much of the groundwork is shared. But it isn't automatic. A business can rank well in search and still be missed or described wrongly by an assistant, which is why it's worth checking the answers directly.
Should I stop spending on SEO?
We wouldn't advise that on the strength of AI alone. Plenty of customers still search the usual way. The better question is whether your current work also makes your information clear and consistent, which helps with both.
Is Google's Gemini the same as Google search?
No. Gemini is Google's AI assistant and writes answers in sentences. Google search shows results. They're different products, so doing well in one doesn't guarantee the other. Our free check asks Gemini and ChatGPT.
Do you do SEO?
Rank in Chat focuses on AI answers: the free check, plus optional paid help. Many of the fixes, such as clearer service pages and tidier listings, also tend to help with search.
