Quick answer

Do I need a new website to show up in AI answers?

By the Rank in Chat team · Updated 27 October 2026

Short answer

Usually not. Most businesses can become much easier for ChatGPT and Gemini to understand by improving the pages on the website they already have: clear service pages, areas, hours and real answers, all in text.

A rebuild only makes sense if your current site can't be edited, is broken, or hides its key facts in ways you can't change.

What to do before you spend on a rebuild

  1. Check what the assistants say first. Before spending anything, find out whether ChatGPT and Gemini already name you, and what they get wrong.
  2. Check your site can be read. Key facts (services, areas, hours, phone) should be in normal text, not only in images, PDFs or pop-ups.
  3. Fill the gaps on the site you have. Add a clear page for each main service, list the areas you cover, and answer common questions.
  4. Fix your listings. Make your Google Business Profile and directory listings match your website exactly.
  5. Only then decide about a rebuild. If your current site genuinely can't be edited, is very slow on phones or is broken, a rebuild may be worth it for customers as well as assistants.

The honest limits

We can't see your website from this page, so this is general guidance. Some sites really are past saving, and a good web designer will tell you honestly. The point is to decide with evidence: what the assistants say now, and what's actually stopping them, rather than assuming a new design is the answer.

Signs your current site is fine to keep

  • You (or someone) can log in and add or edit pages.
  • It works on a phone and loads in a few seconds.
  • Your phone number and address are text you can select, not part of an image.
  • It's on your own domain name and you control it.

Signs a rebuild might be worth it

  • Nobody has the login, or the platform is no longer supported.
  • The whole site is one image or a set of PDFs.
  • It's painfully slow or broken on phones, which hurts with customers regardless of AI.

The £395 +VAT audit is designed partly for this moment: it shows where you stand across 4 assistants and gives a prioritised fix list, so you can see whether the fixes fit your current site before committing to a new one.

See where you stand first. It's free.

We ask ChatGPT and Google's Gemini the kind of questions your customers ask, then email you whether you were named, roughly where, and who was suggested instead. A person reviews your check before we send it, usually within 2 working days.

Questions people ask

A web designer told me I need a new site for AI. Are they wrong?

Not necessarily, but ask them what exactly is stopping assistants from understanding your current site. If the answer is missing pages or unclear wording, those can usually be added to the site you have. If it's that the site can't be edited or doesn't work on phones, a rebuild may be fair.

Does the platform matter (WordPress, Wix, Squarespace and so on)?

Much less than what's written on the pages. Mainstream website builders can all publish clear, readable text. What matters is whether the facts are there and correct.

Will a new website get me recommended?

Not by itself. Assistants also look at your listings, reviews and what other sites say. And nobody outside the AI companies controls their answers, so no website can promise a recommendation.
