Illustrated example

What a customer sees when they ask AI, before and after.

A walkthrough with a made-up dog groomer, from the first check to a re-check weeks later. Every business and answer here is fictional.

The set-up

Meet Example Grooming Co, a fictional dog groomer in Leeds. The owner is good at the job and has loyal customers, but new enquiries have slowed. A friend mentions she found her groomer by asking ChatGPT. So the owner wonders: when someone asks an AI assistant for a dog groomer in Leeds, what do they see?

Question: "Can you recommend a good dog groomer in Leeds?"

ChatGPT (made-up answer)

  1. 1Groomer A
  2. 2Groomer B
  3. 3Groomer C

Gemini (made-up answer)

  1. 1Groomer B
  2. 2Groomer C
  3. 3Groomer D
Example Grooming Co isn't named by either. Gemini's answer also lists Example Grooming Co's old phone number under a different name. All names and answers are made up to show the idea.

What the first check turned up

In our story, the first check shows three problems, all common in real life:

  • The website's services page is a gallery of photos with no words: nothing says "hand-stripping", "puppy's first groom" or "nervous dogs".
  • The Google Business Profile still has the phone number from before the owner moved premises.
  • The business has few reviews, and most just say "lovely".

What was fixed

  1. A clear page for each main service, written the way customers ask (see writing service pages).
  2. The same name, address and phone number on the website, Google Business Profile and two directories.
  3. Every happy customer asked for a review, with a nudge to mention their dog's breed and the service (see reviews that help).

The re-check

Weeks later, the same question is asked again in clean chats. Switch the illustration above to "Re-check" to see the made-up result: named by one assistant, not yet by the other. In real life, the picture might be better, the same, or mixed, and it can change from one asking to the next. Our answer on how long it takes explains why.

What to take from it

The useful lesson isn't the made-up result. It's the order: find out what's said, fix what you control, re-check with the same questions. Our free check does the first step for ChatGPT and Google's Gemini.

See where you stand first. It's free.

We ask ChatGPT and Google's Gemini the kind of questions your customers ask, then email you whether you were named, roughly where, and who was suggested instead. A person reviews your check before we send it, usually within 2 working days.

Questions people ask

Is this a real client?

No. Example Grooming Co and every business named on this page are made up, and so are the answers. It's an illustration of the process, not evidence of results.

Would my results look like this?

Nobody can say in advance. Some businesses are already named, some move after fixes, and some don't move within weeks. That's why we describe the process rather than promise an outcome.

Can I follow these steps myself?

Yes. Every fix in this walkthrough is something an owner can do. The how-to pages linked below explain each one.
